Founded in 2020, the SOL Collective was established to uplift and showcase the voices of women of color in the storytelling community and arts scene of Chicago. The name SOL holds significant meaning for us as it symbolizes our identity as women of the Sun, our connection to our ancestral spirits, and our commitment to sharing the Stories of Our Lives.
SOL Collective Announces Annual Storytelling Show
“Last Night a DJ Saved My Life”
Chicago, IL — SOL Collective, the acclaimed platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of women of color, proudly announces its annual storytelling event, set to take place on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at The Promontory in Hyde Park. This year’s theme, “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life,” explores the transformative power of music through deeply personal narratives that celebrate how rhythm and melody shape lives, build community and inspire resilience.
The event promises an afternoon of authentic storytelling, laughter, connection, and music, as participants share moving stories inspired by the beats and lyrics that carried them through life’s pivotal moments. Each storyteller brings their unique voice to the stage, weaving a tapestry of experiences that honor love, perseverance, and the healing power of music. To magnify the experience the event will include a day party accompanied by the talents of DJ Ca$h Era on the turntable.
Our featured storytellers include SOL Collective’s co-founder Shelley A. Davis, artistic director Emily Hooper Lansana, and members Le'Trice Buckingham, Terri A. Johnson, Keelah Moore, and Karin Norington-Reaves.
Joining the lineup are two dynamic guest storytellers:
Tracie D. Hall, former Executive Director of the American Library Association (ALA) and one of TIME magazine’s 2023 TIME100 most influential people.
Dr. Ada Cheng, a renowned educator, artist, and speaker celebrated for using storytelling to illuminate structural inequalities, spark meaningful dialogue, and foster vibrant community connections.
All featured storytellers are champions of empowerment and creativity, inspiring audiences to reflect, engage, and connect through the transformative art of storytelling.
